a-project is a design practice that provides a flexible architectural service that is responsive to the complexities of contemporary life and the varied situations of the built environment and client needs. It focusses on an open approach to design problems – responding to the multiple factors that shape the process of designing – from the social, economic and physical environmental challenges to historic, material and personal narratives.

a-project
a-project is an architectural practice that is founded on a recognition of the uncertainty and instability inherent in every design situation, and the intrinsic capacity for design to project new opportunities that improve situations, translate limitations, create new contexts and realise dynamic interventions for architecture. Making, testing, interrogating, discussing, translating and constructing new ways of thinking and doing – as an open and ongoing enquiry.
a-project reconstructs architectural practice as a service focussed on the dynamic activity for architecture. Practice that speculates, projects and responds to the changing environment of production and need rather than reproducing established solutions and positions of architecture. It recognises a broader context for practising – the multiple nature of cultural production and the opportunities for cross-fertilisation of artistic and technical expertise through collaboration and alternative ways of working as an exposed practice.

a-project was founded in December 2013 and is run by Felix Robbins.
Felix Robbins is a qualified architect with an extensive experience of architectural practice – combining an understanding of the commercial realities and complexities of large-scale urban regeneration and developer-led schemes, the built experience of private and public projects with limited budgets and resources through to a range of experimental interventions, advanced digital design processes, speculative work and design research.
Felix gained a Diploma in Architectural Design from the Bartlett, University College London in 2002, an MArch in 2003 and qualified professionally in 2006. Felix has worked for dECOi architects in Paris and oceanD in London. His work for these practices has included residential, cultural and competition projects – all developing innovative approaches to digital design practice and widely published.
From 2006-2013 Felix worked at Make, working on large scale commercial and urban regeneration projects – most notably large urban regeneration schemes in London at Wembley and the Elephant & Castle.
Felix has also taught as a visiting critic at Diploma and MArch level at the Bartlett and AA. In 2018-19 he completed a PhD by Design at the Bartlett supervised by Neil Spiller and the late Ranulph Glanville – research that speculates on the possibility of design to transcend the contradictions of architectural production. His research both explores the fundamental contradictions of practice and design, as well as investigating alternative ways of working and advanced digital / analogue processes of designing.
Felix established a-project in December 2013 – to explore new ways of working and producing architecture. Combining the experience of commercial development, built projects and experimental research to provide an architectural service that is responsive to the current climate of architectural and cultural production, and the challenges of constructing in the contemporary built and social environment.
